Android DAC compatibility list (community updated)

This is a tread to gather experiences on what phones works and doesn't work with the Hifime DACs. Please submit your phone model and software version if it is not listed below.

In general, the Android and Tiny model works with most phones as it uses a simpler and older USB receiver chip (PCM2706).

Android Lollipop 5.0 is supposed to support USB DACs out of the box, however it seems that some phone makers still haven't implemented DAC support even for 5.0

Hifimediy Android and Tiny DAC

This is the recommended DAC for Android, as it works with most phones, and the Android model comes with a microUSB cable that plugs directly into the phone

Should work with most Android phones running android 4.2.2 and above.

Note: Several reports that the sound is mono with the Tiny/Android models under Android 6.X - Please send a message if you have it working in stereo in Android 6 with this model.

2 people have this question

@ Sarath - we have not tested with nexus 5x, but would be very surprised if it didn't work with the 5X.

@Zuhairi Zainudin yes, it is ROM and kernal specific, as some kernels might have removed this feature. CM seems to generally work now, but a couple of years ago it often didn't work even when Samsung native Android worked.

Thanks. OK so from my understanding now the new SA9023 USB Receiver Chip has better Android 6 support unlike the PCM2706 right?

@Zuhairi Zainudin, yes, it's more like that Android has some kind of bug that currently affects pcm2706. Not sure about CM. but we know that the Sabre 9018 and newest Sabre DAC works.

Hi, just joined to share this information:

Nexus 7 2013, Android 6.0.1: Hifimediy Sabre (UAE23)

This combination works in STEREO!

I am quite pleased that a $42 DAC will work for my new setup (replacing a Behringer UCA222 which was previously used with a [now dead] Nexus 7 2012).

i have 3 questions:

1. i just purchased the hifime sabre 9018 usb dac, but the sellers name was (hifime) without (diy) yet it looks identical & it has good reviews, is it genuine ?

2. would it work with a Samsung S7 edge (international version) without stuttering every 3 seconds ? as i heard it happened to some people

3. if not, would it work with the free version of onkyo hf player, instead of the paid usb audio pro?

The Android Sabre 9018 DAC don't work with Samsung Galaxy S5.

@Thomasznilsson

Can you try the Hiby application? It is reported to work on other Samsungs.

Sony Xperia X works with DAC/ AMP  I went to a hifi store to test the dragonfly usb dac with the phone. I didn't expect it to work, but it did. I am on Android 6.0.1

HIFIMEDIY SABRE ANDROID DAC

Working:

Lenovo Tab 3 A8 (TB3-850F) running Android 6.0.  Works fine for all system sounds, also works fine exclusively controlled by Neutron Player.

@Julian, thanks, we have added it to the first post.

HiFime Sabre 9018 USB TYPE C

Working:

Huawei Nova running on Android 7.0. The DAC works fine (tested with Spotify and Android Music Player)

Im very happy. Sounds perfectly with my Ultimate Ears tiple.fi 10 pro (Multi-BA) :-)!

Hi Kim, thanks for the info and great to know that Huawei supports DACs now, as they didn't support USB Audio at all previously.

Will add it the the first post.

Work well with Samsung S7Edge International (Exynos)

First, when I plug DAC into the phone, a pop-up message from system ask you to use this device with USB Player Pro, from this step there are 2 cases:

1) If you chose 'No': all the app on my S7 (Youtube, Spotify, system sound...) work well with DAC. With my ear and headphone (B&O H6, Sennheiser Momentum InEar) the output power is clearly improved but the sound quality only a bit better (hardly find out).

2) If you chose 'Yes', USB Player Pro will open and initialize interface with DAC and from that moment, only USB Player Pro can make sound output, but sound quality seems much better.

I think in the 1st case: only Amp work to amplify signal direct from phone. And in 2nd case: Android system is by passed, both DAC and Amp Chip take into work. Do am I think right?

By the way, the 9018 DAC luckily work perfectly with my phone. I almost satisfy with this excellent tiny combo DAC+Amp. 4.5/5 Stern.

Thanks and good to hear it works nice with the S7 Edge International.

No, the DAC will always work as a DAC and amplifier, it's not technically possible to use only the amp part (and analog audio from the phone's internal DAC).

The differences you experience might be because of different music files, as files you play in USB Audio player pro will probably be higher quality than Spotify, Youtube etc. Also USB Audio player pro has some other advantages.
